Morgan Reigns The Red Bull Ring With Two Hard-fought Podiums

Alex Morgan revved up his championship fight this weekend, claiming his first pole position and a duo of hard-fought podiums in the latest thrilling round of SEAT León Eurocup championship. With supreme pace and masterful control, Alex took the Red Bull Ring challenge by the horns, to give his best performance of the season.

The majestic ribbon of tarmac, carved into the picturesque Styrian hills played host to another enthralling round of wheel-to-wheel action, where Alex Morgan confidently powered his Wolf-Power Racing car to his maiden pole position.

Starting on the front row for race one, the Reading-based driver made a great start to lead the pack through turn one. Alex was comfortably holding off Mikel Azcona, but an off-track overtake from the Spanish driver at turn one, left Alex in 2nd place on lap 3.  With his focus firmly set on reclaiming his rightful position, Alex chased Azcona’s PCR Sport car, but the Welsh-born driver was dealt a challenging blow when his brake cooler duct dislodged in the closing stages of the race.

Nevertheless, Alex tenaciously maintained his 2nd place but the brake issue lead to a total failure on the final lap, propelling him off the track at speed towards the wall. With a masterful exhibition of control, the intrepid racer expertly rescued his fortune, losing only one position, to mount the final step of the podium.

The second race was the reverse grid event, and so Alex had to start from 10th place. With limited overtaking opportunities at the Red Bull Ring, Alex relished the tough challenge ahead, and gave a magnificent display of his racing finesse to claim place-after-place in the opening laps.

Seizing his opportunity on lap two, Alex launched himself around the outside of three cars at turn 2. During the close fought fight, Alex received contact on his rear corner pushing him wide, but he emerged from the group in 2nd place. Alex pushed hard to chase down the race leader but was unable to catch him by the end of the race. Despite holding 2nd place on track, Alex was unfortunately handed a 3 second penalty for the earlier incident and therefore finished in 3rd place.

At the end of the second lap I was up to 2nd place, which I couldn't quite believe. From then on I just pushed as hard as I could to chase the leader. The 3 second penalty due to an earlier incident was unfortunate, so I was classified in 3rd place.

Despite a challenging weekend, Alex Morgan gave a spirited performance to claim 35 championship points:

The weekend has been very good on so many levels. I managed to take my first pole position in the series and it was also the first time I scored two podium finishes in one weekend in the SEAT Eurocup.

With just one week until the next round of the the SEAT León Eurocup, Alex is buoyed by his continued success and is eager to hunt his first win of the season:

The speed we had at the Red Bull Ring was amazing and so I head to the Nürburgring next weekend full of confidence. I won there last year and so I will be aiming for the same again. I have also closed the gap to the top 3 in the championship and so I'm still in the hunt for the title which is the goal!

The SEAT León Eurocup speeds to Nürburgring on the 17th - 18th September, where Alex Morgan has every confidence he can maintain his fierce championship fight.
