Mixed Weekend In Eurocup Finale For Morgan

Alex Morgan went into the last race of the season as the highest placed British driver in the series and was looking to maintain his gap over fellow brits Dean Smith and Richard Singleton. The weekend started well with promising pace in testing but after a disrupted qualifying session Morgan found himself having to start 32nd on the grid. With the drivers only getting one lap to put a time in on the drying circuit, Alex was well positioned to achieve a good start position but following a mistake by Berthon in front of him, he was compromised by some bad blocking in the last sector which spoilt his lap. This did not faze the young Welshman however and he was focussed and making a spectacle in race 1. After making a great start and conserving his wet tyres well through the race as the track dried rapidly, Morgan managed to carve his way through the field into 11th place. By the end of the race he was lapping at almost 2 seconds per lap faster than the cars in front and would have made it to the top ten had there been another lap. After the promising first race, Alex was hoping to achieve the same in the second race but knew it would be harder to overtake as many cars on a full dry circuit. He nevertheless made a sterling effort to make it up to 17th by the end of the race and secured 14th in the championship and highest British driver. Alex said:
I was extrememly disappointed with qualifying after Berthon made a mistake and blocked me in the final sector. That pretty much decided the outcome of my weekend but I did my best in the races and had two of the most exciting races I've ever done. I don't think I have overtaken as many cars in a single race as I did in the first race and my pace at this track was clearly shown. Despite thinking 'what if' after the races I am happy to have finished as the highest British driver in the series and to have obtained a couple of podiums in one of the hardest championships out there. The guys that I have raced this year are extremely talented and I hope to race them again in the future but I will be leaving the sport after this weekend due to lack of funding. I will be completing my education and will then look at making a return. I definitely have a lot more to give in this sport and I will be looking forward to proving that on the day I make my return. I want to thank my sponsors and Fortec for the ongoing support they have given me to get me where I am today.
Follow Alex's progress here. An update on his awaited return to the sport will hopefully follow shortly.
