Difficult Weekend For Morgan At Thruxton

Bridgend-born Alex Morgan continued his championship bid at Thruxton for rounds 5 and 6 of the UK Clio Cup Championship. After claiming three podiums in the first four races, expectations were high for high points scoring finishes.   Qualifying on Saturday was an extremely frustrating affair as a severed brake line forced the Welshman to retire from the session only managing to obtain p8 and p11 overall. With the frustrations of qualifying in mind, Alex made the most of a dry and sunny day on Sunday at Thruxton to make a good getaway and climb several places into the first complex. After avoiding a collision, Alex was shuffled down the order and set about fighting back through the pack. Half way into the race however, whilst making a move past Stilp and Rivett, Alex was tagged on the rear corner on the way into the final complex and was pushed into the tyre wall ending his race. With the car heavily damaged, Alex sat out the remainder of the race and was faced with a tight fight to get the car driveable for the second race later in the same day.   With the car being made ready with a few minutes to spare, Alex took up his grid slot and putting his race 1 troubles behind him, climbed up the order early on. After a race long battle Alex fought his way into 5th place by the drop of the flag to claim some crucial championship points.   Morgan said about the weekend:
Qualifying was a disaster and I was really placed on the back foot from this point. Having to start the race from so far back on the grid, I was caught up in a battle I shouldn’t have been involved in and that ultimately sealed my fate in race 1. I was very pleased with the second race result however, as the car was heavily damaged and I still managed to get 5th place and only be 0.1s off fastest lap. All in all it was difficult weekend but I salvaged all that was possible and turn my attentions to Oulton Park where we will have a new chassis and good opportunity to score good points at a circuit where I have always done well.
Alex is now in third place in the championship behind SV Racing team-mate Josh Cook and Team Pyro’s Mike Bushell. The next race takes place at Oulton Park on 7-8 June.
